Etymology

Compound of съпаси́ (sŭpasí, save) +‎ богъ (bogŭ, god),[1][2][3][4] equivalent to Proto-Slavic *sъ(n) +‎ *pasti +‎ *bogъ.

Formed in the Christian period among the Eastern Slavs on the territory of Kievan Rus. Also compare the etymological development of English goodbye.
