Etymology[edit]
From a³¹- + jaʔ³¹. The root -jaʔ³¹ is possibly related to Burmese ရက် (rak, “day (24 hrs)”), hence from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-r(j)ak (“day, full day; overnight”). Cognate with Tibetan ཞག (zhag, “evening, one day (24 hrs)”), Old Chinese 夕 (*ljaːɡ, “evening, night”), Nuosu ꉖ (hxot, “night”). Compare with Lhao Vo ayo, and Zaiwa ayoq.
