Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰenH-tlom (way, path); or alternatively from *gʷʰen-tlom, from *gʷʰen- (to strike, kill), in the sense of “cleared path (in a wood)”; compare Proto-Germanic *banō (path, cleared way).
