From Old Norse Óláfr, from Proto-Norse *ᚨᚾᚢᛚᚨᛁᛒᚨᛉ (Anulaibaʀ) (whence also variant Óleifr, Áleifr), consisting of *ᚨᚾᚢ- (anu-, ancestor) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- (old woman, ancestor)) and *-ᛚᚨᛁᛒᚨᛉ (-laibaʀ, remainder) (from Proto-Germanic *laibijaną (to leave), causative of Proto-Germanic *lībaną (to remain), from Proto-Indo-European *lip- (to stick, glue)).
