Etymology[edit]

äpple +‎ knycka +‎ byxa, slang from the 1930s[1], assuming that such trousers were useful when stealing apples because they were baggy, tied to the leg under the knee, and could be filled with stolen apples. But perhaps the word is just an imitation of knickerbockers (knyckarbyxor)?
