From Proto-Indo-European *keng, *kenk 'hook, grappling hook, handle'. Compare Persian čang (claw, nail, fist), Lithuanian kéngė (hook), Middle Irish ail-cheng (rake), English hatchel. Alternatively a loan from Persian چنگال (čangâl, hook) through Ottoman Turkish چنگال (çengel).
