Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Uralic *witti (five). Cognates include Finnish viisi, Estonian viis, Khanty вет (wet) and Nganasan бииʔ (bīʔ, ten). The labialization *i > *ü > ö after original *w is regular; cf. öl (to kill) < *wilä-.
