From Danish øje, replaced native aue, from Old Danish øghæ, from Old Norse auga, from Proto-Germanic *augô, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (eye; to see). Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk auga, auge, Icelandic auga, Faroese eyga and Swedish öga.
