From Proto-Germanic *þakjaną, from *þaką (covering, roof). Cognate with Old Frisian thekkia (West Frisian dekke), Old Saxon theccian, thekkian, Dutch dekken, Old High German decchan, decchen (German decken), Old Norse þekja (Swedish täcka, Danish tække).
