From Old High German ahsla. Cognate with Old Norse ǫxl (shoulder) ( > Danish aksel, Icalandic öxl) and ǫxull (axle) (> Danish aksel), English axle. Either cognate with or derived from Latin axilla (shoulder joint). Cognate with Sanskrit अक्ष (akṣa, axle).
