From Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēks), from Proto-Hellenic *alōpēḱos (similar to Old Armenian աղուէս (ałuēs)), diminutive of Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p ~ *h₂ulp ‘(red) fox’ (compare Italian volpe, Lithuanian lãpė, Albanian dhelpër, Persian روباه (rubâh)).
