Modern adaptation (-έας) of Ancient Greek εἰσαγγελεύς (eisangeleús), original sense 'bailiff' / 'court clerk', from εἰς (eis, in, into, to) +‎ ἀγγέλλω (angéllō, to carry, to deliver, to announce) +‎ -εύς (-eús). Modern sense acquired in Koine period.
