From Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (moon, month), probably from Proto-Indo-European base *me- (to measure). Cognate with Persian ماه (mâh), Old Armenian ամիս (amis, month), Latin mensis (month), OCS месеци, Latvian: mēnesis, Dutch maan, Welsh mis, Breton miz (month).
