Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Beekes suggests a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ergʰ- (to mount). According to Frisk, an iterative-intensive formation from ἔρχομαι (érkhomai) ("come, go"). Watkins posits a connection with ὄρχις (órkhis) ("testicle").
