The Doric ποιϝέω probably reflects an earlier form. Possibly derived form a noun *ποιϝός. Also perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kʷei. Possible cognates include Sanskrit चिनोति (cinóti) and Old Church Slavonic чинити (činiti).
