Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic рождьство (roždĭstvo), from Proto-Slavic *roďьstvo. Displaced inherited Old East Slavic рожьство (rožĭstvo), which is still found in dialects (see рожество́ (rožestvó) and рожство́ (rožstvó)).
