From Old Turkic aγïz, from Proto-Turkic *āgıŕ, *Agɨŕ (mouth).

Cognate with Khakas, Shor, Tuvan аас (aas), Southern Altai оос (oos), Kyrgyz ооз (ooz), Kazakh ауыз (awız), Karachay-Balkar аууз (awuz), Kumyk авуз (awuz), Nogai, Tatar авыз (awız), Uzbek ogʻiz, Azeri, Crimean Tatar, Turkish ağız, Gagauz aaz, Turkmen agyz (mouth) etc.
