Old Church Slavonic [edit]

Etymology [edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ- (height). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *bergaz (English barrow, German Berg), Old Irish brigh (mountain), Sanskrit बृहत् (bṛhát, high), Old Armenian բարձր (barjr, high). According to Hermann Hirt, Erich Berneker and Solmsen, as quoted by Vasmer, the Slavic words are of Germanic origin[1].
