Inherited from Old East Slavic *вересень (*veresenĭ, September). Compare Old Church Slavonic врѣсень (vrěsenĭ), whence Old East Slavic врѣсень (vrěsenĭ, September). Cognates include Belarusian верасень (vjerasjenʹ, September) and Polish wrzesień. Related to Russian ве́реск (véresk, heather).
