From Proto-Turkic *teŋiŕ (sea).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (teŋiz, sea); Kazakh теңіз (teñız, sea), Kyrgyz деңиз (deŋiz, sea), Uzbek dengiz (sea), Turkmen deňiz (sea), Turkish deniz (sea), etc.
