Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Ruthenian заборони́ти (zaboroníti), from Proto-Slavic *zaborniti. By surface analysis, за- (za-) +‎ борони́ти (boronýty). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic забранити (zabraniti), Serbo-Croatian забра́нити, Belarusian забарані́ць (zabaranícʹ) and Polish zabronić.
