From пясть (pjastʹ), from Old Church Slavonic пѧсть (pęstĭ). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian пест/pest (fist), Slovak päsť (fist), Slovene pest (fist), dialectal Bulgarian (Western dialects) пестник (pestnik), песник (pesnik), пестница (pestnica, fist). Compare Ancient Greek πυγμή (pugmḗ), Old High German fust (whence German Faust).
