From Proto-Slavic *moltъ, from Proto-Indo-European *molh₁-, *melh₁- (“‘to grind, crush’”), whence also млѣти (mlěti), “‘to grind’”). Compare similar semantic development from the same PIE root in Latinc malleus (“‘hammer’”), beside the usual reflex molō (“‘I grind’”).
