From Proto-Slavic *moltъ, from Proto-Indo-European *molh₁-, *melh₁- (to grind, crush), whence also млѣти (mlěti), to grind). Compare similar semantic development from the same PIE root in Latinc malleus (hammer), beside the usual reflex molō (I grind).
