Serbo-Croatian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *ne + *este, second-person plural present tense form of *byti. This formation later created *ne jesmъ in the South Slavic vernaculars, which merged to become něste (attested in the 14th century). Because of the yat reflex, něste became rendered as несте in Ekavian speeches.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /něːste/
  • Hyphenation: не‧сте

Verb[edit]

не́сте (Latin spelling néste)

  1. (regional, chiefly Serbia) negative second-person plural present of бити
