From Proto-Slavic *plьvati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- (to spit, vomit). Cognate with Bulgarian плюя (pljuja), Serbo-Croatian пљу̏вати/pljȕvati, Slovene pljuvati, Slovak pľuť. Non-Slavic cognates include Ancient Greek πτύω (ptúō), Gothic 𐍃𐍀𐌴𐌹𐍅𐌰𐌽 (speiwan), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति (ṣṭhīvati, to spit), Latin spuō, Old Armenian թուք (tʿukʿ).
