Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pľьnǫti; compare *pľьvati (to spit), distantly related to Latvian spļaut.[1][2] Compare Ukrainian плю́нути (pljúnuty), Belarusian плю́нуць (pljúnucʹ), Polish plunąć.
