From Classical Mongolian ᠰᠣᠶ᠋ᠤᠯ (soyul, “civilisation, the act of civilising”); equivalent to соё- (sojo-, “to civilize”) + -л (-l, nominative suffix). Semantically compare Chinese 文化 (wénhuà, “culture”). Cognate with Buryat соёл (sojol, “culture”) and Kalmyk сойл (soyl, “culture”).
