Bashkir[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Via Volga Turki, from Chagatai توغرى (toğri, correct; straight; earnest, sincere), from *toğrï (straight, direct; correct; just; sincere).

This specific line of descent is indicated by a peculiar semantic shift and the retention of -ğ-.

Compare to Old Uyghur [script needed] (toγru, correct, direct); Tatar тугры (tuğrı, loyal), Uzbek to'g'ri (correct), Turkish doğru (true, straight), etc.

Also check out Bashkir тура (tura, straight, direct), which has developed along the regular Kypchak pathway from a parallel Turkic archetype *toğra (straight, direct; correct; just; sincere).
