Etymology

Via Volga Turki, from Chagatai توغرى (toğri, “correct; straight; earnest, sincere”), from *toğrï (“straight, direct; correct; just; sincere”).

This specific line of descent is indicated by a peculiar semantic shift and the retention of -ğ-.

Compare to Old Uyghur [script needed] (toγru, “correct, direct”); Tatar тугры (tuğrı, “loyal”), Uzbek to'g'ri (“correct”), Turkish doğru (“true, straight”), etc.

Also check out Bashkir тура (tura, “straight, direct”), which has developed along the regular Kypchak pathway from a parallel Turkic archetype *toğra (“straight, direct; correct; just; sincere”).
