From Proto-Slavic *tьrnъ, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥nom, *(s)tern- (sharp stalk or thorn), possibly derived from *ster- (stiff). Compare Czech, Slovene, and Serbo-Croatian trn, Slovak tŕň, German Dorn, English thorn.
