From Arabic طباق (ṭabāq, ṭubāq, a type of medicinal herb), or via Russian табак (tabak, tobacco), from the same source.

Cognate with Kazakh темекі (temeki), Kyrgyz тамеки (tameki), Uzbek tamaki, Turkmen temmäki, Azeri tənbəki, etc.
