Derived from Old East Slavic (Old Russian) угъ (ugъ, south), from Proto-Slavic *jugъ, whence also Russian юг (jug, south). The meaning evolved like this: "south" ⇒ "the time of the day when the sun is in the south" ⇒ "supper".
