From Old Church Slavonic хапѭштє (xapjǫšte), from Proto-Slavic *xopiti. Akin to Russian хапать (xapatʹ) and Slovak chápať (to fathom, comprehend). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂p- (take, seize, grasp, grab). Non-Slavic cognates include German happig (pricey), Latin capiō, Old Armenian խափանեմ (xapʿanem).
