From Proto-Slavic *junъ (young) + *-akъ (masculine nominalizing suffix cognate to Serbo-Croatian "-ак"). Cognate with Church Slavonic юнакъ (junakŭ), Czech jonák (Moravian Czech junák), Polish junak, Bulgarian юнак.
