The first part, *Դրասխան (*Drasxan), is a given name probably borne by the city's founder, from Middle Iranian *dars-xᵛan, from Iranian *dr̥s-hvan- (with a sun-like look), composed of *dr̥s- (look) + *hvan- (sun). The rest is -ա- (-a-) +‎ կերտ (kert).
