Etymology[edit]

The older form is աղբեւր (ałbewr), by dissimilation from *արբեւր (*arbewr), by adding a prothetic vowel to *րբեւր (*rbewr), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewr with regular metathesis. Cognate with Ancient Greek φρέαρ (phréar, well, reservoir), Gothic 𐌱𐍂𐌿𐌽𐌽𐌰 (brunna).
