Perhaps from one of the languages of Asia Minor. Compare ἄλιψ (álips, rock) attested by Hesychius.

The Georgian word was borrowed anciently, when ղ (ł) was pronounced as IPA(key): [ɫ]. The Persian was borrowed later, when ղ (ł) became IPA(key): [ʁ].
