From Proto-Indo-European *h₂is-sk-, zero-grade of *h₂eys-sk-. Cognates include Sanskrit इच्छति (icháti, to wish, strive for), Proto-Germanic *aiskō (demand, question, inspection), Latin aerusco (to beg, ask for) and Proto-Slavic *jьskati (to ask, to seek). Related to հայց (haycʿ).
