Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Martirosyan the literal meaning is “the fallen one”, from earlier *անկտի (*ankti), from անկանիմ (ankanim, to fall down; to sin, prostitute) +‎ -տի (-ti). Compare սամտի (samti).
