From Proto-Indo-European *rev-, which also gave Sanskrit रवि (ravi, “sun”). The word արեւ (arew) is descended from the same root. Further cognates include Sanskrit रुधिर (rudhirá, “red”), Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthros, “red”), Latin ruber (“red”), rufus (“ruddy”), Lithuanian raudonas (“red”), Old English rēad (English red) and Russian рдеть, руда, рыжий, ржавчина, русый.
