From Middle Persian [script?] bāz or bāǰ. Compare Modern Persian باز (bāz, hawk, falcon). For the later spelling բազայ (bazay) compare Persian بازه (bāza, type of a hawk). The Iranian word was also borrowed into Georgian as ბაზი (bazi).
