The original spelling is բանդ (band), from Middle Persian *band (bonds; prison). Compare Persian بند (band, tie, chain, shackle). Through Proto-Indo-European the Iranian word is related to պինդ (pind, firm, hard, solid) and to English bind. See also բահուանդ (bahuand), մեհեւանդ (mehewand), կարաւանդք (karawandkʿ), պախճաւանդ (paxčawand), պարաւանդ (parawand), դանդանաւանդ (dandanawand), շարաւանդ (šarawand).
