Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly from Classical Syriac ܒܘܪܓܐ (būrgā, tower). Alternatively, from Urartian [script needed] (burgana, fortress). Compare also Ancient Greek πύργος (púrgos). According to Martirosyan “we may be dealing with a ‘Wanderwort’ ultimately of I[ndo-]E[uropean] origin; the Armenian, Greek, and Near Eastern forms may reflect an I[ndo-]E[uropean] centum form (perhaps back loans from indigenous Mediterranean and/or European languages)”.

Noun[edit]

բուրգն (burgn

  1. tower or similar tall building
  2. pyramid
  3. dice-box (a box in which dice are shaken and thrown onto the game-table; called so because of its shape)
