Etymology [edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *wei(H)nyo-, *woi(H)nyo-. Cognates include Ancient Greek οἶνος (oinos), Albanian venë, verë, Latin vinum, Hittite  (wiyan-, wine). A non-Indo-European substrate origin has also been suggested: compare Hebrew יין (yāyin) and Arabic وين (wain).

    զուարթանալ սրտի ի գինւոյ, ընդ գինիս մտանել, զգինեօք անկանել, ի գինւոջ լինել (zuartʿanal srti i ginwoy, ənd ginis mtanel, zgineōkʿ ankanel, i ginwoǰ linel) — to be merry with wine, to drink, to get drunk
    թափել զգինի, սթափել ի գինւոյ (tʿapʿel zgini, stʿapʿel i ginwoy) — to sleep one's self sober
    զուարթացուցանել ի գինւոյ (zuartʿacʿucʿanel i ginwoy) — to make tipsy, to fuddle
