Armenian [edit]

Etymology [edit]

From Old Armenian դատ (dat), from Middle Persian dāt (law, justice). Compare Modern Persian داد (dād, justice), Old Persian dāta- (law), Avestan dāta- (law, rule). All of these stem from the Iranian root *√dā (to give, put) (see Old Persian 𐎭𐎭𐎠𐎬𐎺 (dadātuv)), and thus are related to Armenian տալ (tal, to give).
