Old Armenian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (dōl, pail, bucket; Aquarius); compare Persian دول (dol, bucket). Alternatively from Classical Syriac ܕܘܠܐ (dawlāʼ, pail, bucket; Aquarius). The Middle Persian word itself is probably borrowed from Syriac anyway. Compare its Semitic cognates: Aramaic דול (daul, bucket), Hebrew דלי (dli, bucket), Arabic دلو (dalw, bucket), Akkadian [script needed] (dalū, dūlu, bucket).
