From Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰ-er-, from *h₁eǵʰ- (balk, border). Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *éźera (lake), Lithuanian ežià (boundary-strip), Latvian eža (balk), Russian яз (jaz, fish weir).
