From Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰ-er-, from *h₁eǵʰ- (balk, border). Cognate with Lithuanian ežià (boundary-strip) and ẽžeras, Latvian eža and ezers, Russian яз (jaz, fish weir) and озеро (ozero).
