The root is *երգէծ (ergēc), from *րգէծ (rgēc), from *գրէծ (grēc), from Proto-Indo-European *wreh₁ǵ-, +‎ -ան- (-an-). Cognates include Ancient Greek ῥήγνυμι (rhḗgnumi), Lithuanian rėžti, and Old Church Slavonic рѣзати (rězati, to cut, slaughter) (Russian резать (rezatʹ)).
