From Middle Iranian *zang(a)-pān. For the constituents compare Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬀 (zaṇga, shank), Middle Persian zng (zang, shin, shank) (both from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰángʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰengʰ-), and Avestan 𐬞𐬁𐬥𐬀- (pāna-), Middle Persian -pʾn' (-pān, -bān, -keeper), whence also -պան (-pan).
