Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed wholly from Parthian *tag(a)-bar (king, literally crown bearing) (compare Persian تاجور (tâjvar)) and reshaped under the influence of the suffix -աւոր (-awor). The first part is the source of Old Armenian թագ (tʿag), the second part goes back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-. Formation in Armenian as թագ (tʿag) + -աւոր (-awor) is unlikely.
