Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kʰV́nd- and cognate with Ancient Greek κάνδαρος (kándaros, charcoal), Sanskrit चन्द्र (candrá, shining), Latin candeo. Related to խանձեմ (xanjem). See also շանթ (šantʿ).
